About us

I took my first pottery class in 2017 and have been a part-time potter ever since. My first firing experience was a disaster; I ended up with glaze all over the kiln shelf and had to throw out many of the pieces. Over the years, I have primarily used cone 6 electric firings. However, I have also fallen into wood firing, initially with Dan Greenfeld and later with Patrick Durkin, participating in about four firings a year.

As I gained more experience, I began to alter and personalize my glazes. These changes taught me that small adjustments can significantly alter the glaze, often in fun and creative ways. Firing is just as integral a process as building the actual form from clay.

My glazes are mainly dipped or brushed on. I typically use one or two layers of glaze, sometimes three if I feel adventurous. I aim for glazes that have subtle textures and richness, often working with an opal glaze and celadons. The glazing process is more about the application for me than the mystery of the fire. My intention is to create surfaces that are rich and varied, much like natural stones, with colors and textures gently emphasizing the form's changes.

Experimentation in my pottery mainly focuses on forms and textures. Wood firing allows me to step back and relinquish some control over the surface, resulting in pieces that are slightly new and surprising each time. I enjoy altering classic glazes to achieve different effects that remain stable but offer subtle variations. In the future, I hope to experiment with crystalline glazes.

The process of pottery is attractive to me because it engages multiple aspects. It is definitely skill-based but also influenced by history and functional constraints. It requires problem-solving and technical skills while exploring science, particularly chemistry and physics. Through my work, I aim to convey that everyday functional objects can be personal and artful, offering an experience beyond their simple function.

I started exploring pottery while in graduate school, working on my dissertation in philosophy. I found it relaxing and now aim to provide others with the opportunity to engage in pottery.
